Python's math.dist in TypeScript

✓ Verified: Python 3.12
Examples tested against actual runtime. CI re-verifies continuously. Only documented examples are tested.

How to use

Install via yarn add locutus and import: import { dist } from 'locutus/python/math/dist'.

Or with CommonJS: const { dist } = require('locutus/python/math/dist')

Use a bundler that supports tree-shaking so you only ship the functions you actually use. Vite, webpack, Rollup, and Parcel all handle this. For server-side use this is less of a concern.

Examples

These examples are extracted from test cases that automatically verify our functions against their native counterparts.

#codeexpected result
1dist([0, 0], [3, 4])5
2dist([1, 2, 3], [1, 2, 3])0
3dist([-1, 2], [2, -2])5

Notes

  • Returns Euclidean distance between two same-length numeric vectors.

Here's what our current TypeScript equivalent to Python's math.dist looks like.

export function dist(p: number[] | unknown, q: number[] | unknown): number {
// discuss at: https://locutus.io/python/dist/
// parity verified: Python 3.12
// original by: Kevin van Zonneveld (https://kvz.io)
// note 1: Returns Euclidean distance between two same-length numeric vectors.
// example 1: dist([0, 0], [3, 4])
// returns 1: 5
// example 2: dist([1, 2, 3], [1, 2, 3])
// returns 2: 0
// example 3: dist([-1, 2], [2, -2])
// returns 3: 5

if (!Array.isArray(p) || !Array.isArray(q)) {
throw new TypeError('dist() requires array-like arguments')
}

if (p.length !== q.length) {
throw new Error('dist() points must have the same dimension')
}

let sum = 0
for (let i = 0; i < p.length; i += 1) {
const left = Number(p[i])
const right = Number(q[i])
const delta = left - right
sum += delta * delta
}

return Math.sqrt(sum)
}

Improve this function

Locutus is a community effort following The McDonald's Theory: we ship first iterations, hoping others will improve them. If you see something that could be better, we'd love your contribution.

Got a rainy Sunday afternoon and a taste for a porting puzzle?

We will then review it. If it's useful to the project and in line with our contributing guidelines your work will become part of Locutus and you'll be automatically credited in the authors section accordingly.
