PHP's abs in TypeScript

Rosetta Stone: c/abs · perl/abs · lua/abs · r/abs · julia/abs · elixir/abs · clojure/abs

How to use

Install via yarn add locutus and import: import { abs } from 'locutus/php/math/abs'.

Or with CommonJS: const { abs } = require('locutus/php/math/abs')

Use a bundler that supports tree-shaking so you only ship the functions you actually use. Vite, webpack, Rollup, and Parcel all handle this. For server-side use this is less of a concern.

Examples

These examples are extracted from test cases that automatically verify our functions against their native counterparts.

#codeexpected result
1abs(4.2)4.2
2abs(-4.2)4.2
3abs(-5)5
4abs('_argos')0

Here's what our current TypeScript equivalent to PHP's abs looks like.

export function abs(mixedNumber: string | number): number {
// discuss at: https://locutus.io/php/abs/
// original by: Waldo Malqui Silva (https://waldo.malqui.info)
// improved by: Karol Kowalski
// improved by: Kevin van Zonneveld (https://kvz.io)
// improved by: Jonas Raoni Soares Silva (https://www.jsfromhell.com)
// example 1: abs(4.2)
// returns 1: 4.2
// example 2: abs(-4.2)
// returns 2: 4.2
// example 3: abs(-5)
// returns 3: 5
// example 4: abs('_argos')
// returns 4: 0

return Math.abs(Number(mixedNumber)) || 0
}

Improve this function

Locutus is a community effort following The McDonald's Theory: we ship first iterations, hoping others will improve them. If you see something that could be better, we'd love your contribution.
