Go's path.Base in TypeScript

✓ Verified: Go 1.23
Examples tested against actual runtime. CI re-verifies continuously. Only documented examples are tested.

How to use

Install via yarn add locutus and import: import { Base } from 'locutus/golang/path/Base'.

Or with CommonJS: const { Base } = require('locutus/golang/path/Base')

Use a bundler that supports tree-shaking so you only ship the functions you actually use. Vite, webpack, Rollup, and Parcel all handle this. For server-side use this is less of a concern.

Examples

These examples are extracted from test cases that automatically verify our functions against their native counterparts.

#codeexpected result
1Base('/a/b/c.txt')'c.txt'
2Base('/a/b/')'b'
3Base('')'.'
4Base('////')'/'

Here's what our current TypeScript equivalent to Go's path.Base looks like.

export function Base(path: string): string {
// discuss at: https://locutus.io/golang/path/Base
// parity verified: Go 1.23
// original by: Kevin van Zonneveld (https://kvz.io)
// example 1: Base('/a/b/c.txt')
// returns 1: 'c.txt'
// example 2: Base('/a/b/')
// returns 2: 'b'
// example 3: Base('')
// returns 3: '.'
// example 4: Base('////')
// returns 4: '/'

const raw = String(path)
if (raw === '') {
return '.'
}

let end = raw.length
while (end > 0 && raw[end - 1] === '/') {
end -= 1
}

if (end === 0) {
return '/'
}

const trimmed = raw.slice(0, end)
const slash = trimmed.lastIndexOf('/')
if (slash < 0) {
return trimmed
}

return trimmed.slice(slash + 1)
}

Improve this function

Locutus is a community effort following The McDonald's Theory: we ship first iterations, hoping others will improve them. If you see something that could be better, we'd love your contribution.
